Tom Hyslop Blues Review Magazine

Bay Area chanteuse Jan Fanucchi seems to have it all, starting with a tough-and-tender vocal approach, continuing through an expert, sympathetic band built around Henry Salvia's keyboards and Walter Jebe's guitars, with a top rhythm section featuring Paul Revelli (drums) and Burt Winn (bass), and Johnny Nocturne guesting on sax, as well as a splendid selection of material. Choice covers on Livin' & Lovin' (Lost Roots 101) include Buck Owens' "Crying Time," J.J. Cale's "Call the Doctor," T-Bone Walker's "Evening," and the elegant "Baby, Get Lost." Fanucchi's originals span Latinized R&B ("Walkin' a Straight Line"), Bo Diddley bounces ("Midnight Madness"), big swing ("You're Just Not Him"), and rolling New Orleans sounds ("No Love Triangles"). The recording is beautiful, Fanucchi's singing is believably nuanced, and the band is with her at every step.
